Tramline Track

Greeted with another lovely sunny weekend, we headed out to the Waitakeres for a day-tramp.

We did a loop walk, of what is probably the best day-walk in the Waitakere ranges. The easy 2 – 3 hour return walk heads up to the dam, following the old 1905 tramline built during the construction of the Waitakere Dam, which provides most of Auckland’s water supply.

Along the way walkers  take  in  tunnels, streams, waterfalls, native bush, ancient kauri, impressive views of Auckland city, and of course the Waitakere Dam itself.

The track is well-maintained and  suitable for all age groups.

Of course, as with any walk in the Waitakeres it is still advisable to take a map, as the complex network of intersecting and forking tracks along the way will confuse even the most experienced of trampers.

To get there, head down the North Western Motorway, exiting at Lincoln Road, and heading towards Scenic Drive, turning off at Falls Road.
