As Waitangi Day was a bonus day off, we (Brian, Dave and I) went for a walk through Goldie’s Bush. It’s a mostly flat, and a very scenic loop track along a stream to a waterfall and back to the car park. It’s around three hours return. Walking along the stream requires multiple stream crossings, but if you don’t mind getting your boots wet it is well worth it. (The DOC signs do say you should only take that route if you’re an experienced tramper, but if you’re careful, it isn’t too difficult in summer when the water is low). The other option is to walk directly to the waterfall and back, instead of going via the stream; this a very easy walk, about 1 hour return.
To get there:
- Take the NW Motorway
- Head to Waitakere via Taupaki Road
- Turn off towards Bethels Beach, and then take the first right onto Wairere Road
- Continue to the end of the road, where there is a car park
